| equation | a statement that two expressions are equivalent |
| inequality | a mathematical sentence that shows the relationship between quantities that are not equivalent. |
| variable | a symbol or letter used to represent a quantity that can change; in the equation y = mx+b it is represented by the variable 'x.' |
| inverse operation | the operation needed to "undo" the operations in an equation |
| population | the entire collection of people, items, or events that are being studied |
| inference | a conclusion made by interpreting data |
| random sample | a sample in which each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected |
| biased | a disproportionate weight in favor of or against an idea or thing, usually in a way that is closed-minded, prejudicial, or unfair. |
