| Term | Definition |
| Numerator | The number or expression written above the line in a fraction. It shows the number of pieces out of the whole. |
| Denominator | The quantity below the fraction bar. It tells the total number of equal parts into which the whole is divided. |
| Unit Fraction | A fraction with a numerator of one. For example, 1/3, 1/5, 1/24, etc. |
| Benchmark Fraction | Fractions that are commonly used in estimation. For example, 1/4, 3/4, 1/2, etc. |
| Equivalent Fraction | Fractions that have the same value. For example, 4/8 = 1/2. |
| Improper Fraction | A fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator. For example, 6/5, 7/3, etc. |
| Proper Fraction | A fraction less than one whole. The numerator is less than the denominator. For example, 3/8, 2/7, etc. |
| Simplify | To express a fraction in simplest form. For example, 3/12 = 1/4. |
| Unlike Denominators | Denominators that are NOT equal. For example, 3/5 and 5/7. |
| Lowest Terms | A fraction where the numerator and denominator have no common factor greater than 1. For example, 1/2, 1/3, 3/5, 5/7. |
| Mixed Number | A number written as a whole number and a fraction. Also called a mixed fraction. For example, 1 2/3. |
| Like Denominators | Denominators in two are more fractions that are the same. For example, 2/5 and 4/5. |
