| Term | Definition | Example |
| Alliteration | This is when words that start with the same sound are close together. | She sang serenely and serenaded those around her. |
| Colours | We associate different ones with different things/emotions. | Jack was red with anger. |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that imitate the sound they are naming. | The bomb went boom. |
| Adjectives | A describing word. | The rocks were jagged. |
| Simile | A literary device that uses the words “like” or “as” to compare two ideas. | Drives like a dream. |
| Senses | Sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. | The ground was cold to the touch. |
| Rule of Three | Using three adjectives, or phrases in a row. | The lion was fierce, hungry and ready to pounce. |
| Metaphor | Stating that one thing is something else. It is a comparison, but it does NOT use like or as to make the comparison. | The tree was an old friend. |
| Adverb | An adverb tells you how the verb is doing something. | The mouse retreated sheepishly. |
| Pathetic Fallacy | When you use the weather to reflect what is happening in the scene. | As the sun shone outside, Jack smiled. |
| Personification | When something is given human characteristics. | The tree waved in the breeze. |
