Question | Answer |
Graph | the point in the plane |
x-axis | the horizontal number line |
y-axis | the vertical number line |
Ordered Pair | if x=4 and y=7 they can be written as (4,7) |
Abscissa | the first number in an ordered pair |
Ordinate | the second number in an ordered pair |
Coordinates | the abscissa and ordinate |
Cartesian Coordinate System | the whole system- x-axis, y-axis, points in the plane |
Quadrants | the axes divide the graph paper into four regions called |
Scale | a number placed every so many units |
Solution | an ordered pair that makes the equation a true statement |
Y Intercept | the value of y when x is 0 |
X Intercept | the value of x when y is 0 |
Rise | in going from one point to another in a Cartesian Coordinate System, the rise is the change in y |
Run | in going from one point to another in a Cartesian Coordinate System, the run is the change in x |
Slope | the slope of a line is the ratio |
Slope-Intercept Form | an eqution of the form y= mx+b, where m and b are constants, is in slope-intercept form. |
Slope of Horizontal Lines | horizontal lines have 0 for a slope |
Slope of Vertical Lines | vertical lines do not have a slope |
Point-Slope Form | an equation in the form y - y= m(x - x) is said to be in point-slope form. the slope is m, and a fixed point on the line is (x,y). the variables x and y stand for coordinates of a variable point on the line |
Equation of Horizontal Lines | if y= constant, the graph is a horizontal line |
Equation of Vertical Lines | if x= constant, the graph is a vertical line |
System of Equations | two or more equations with the same variables |
Solution of a System | an ordered pair that satisfies all the equations in the system |
Substitution | a method of solving a system of equations by solving one equation to get one of the variables and substituting the result in the other equation |
Simultaneous Equations | equations in a system that can be solved at the same time |
Linear Combination | what you get by multiplying each quantity by a constant, then adding the results. the method is also called addition-subtraction |
