| Term | Definition |
| Electrode extension | The distance between the end of the contact tube and the end of the electrode. |
| Globular transfer | GMAW application in which average currents slightly higher than those used with short-circuit transfer are used to form a droplet that goes onto a base metal as a result of short-circuiting or gravity. |
| Inductance | the rate of rise of current as opposed to the final amount of current available; used in short-circuit transfer to increase or decrease the number of short-circuit metal transfers per second. |
| Short-Circuit Transfer | GMAW application in which low currents, low voltages, nd small diameter wires are used to weld in all positions on thin to heavy metals. |
| Slope | The slant of the volts versus amp curve, or the volts change per 100 amps. |
| Slope control | A power supply control that regulates the amount of pinch force available on welding wire and controls spatter in short-circuit transfer. |
| Spray transfer | GMAW application in which high currents, high voltage, and large diameter wires are used to weld thicker metals mostly in the flat and horizontal positions. |
| Travel speed | The linear rate at which the arc is moved along the weld joint. |
| Travel angle | The relationship of the electrode axis with respect to the direction of travel. |
| Work angle | The angle between the electrode axis and the adjacent work surface. |
