Question | Answer |
Absolute zero | the theoretically lowest possible temperature, 0 K, at which molecular motion ceases and gas volume becomes zero |
Avogadro's law | equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain epual numbers of molecules |
Barometer | a device used to measure atmospheric pressure |
Boyle's law | the volume of a given mass of a gas at constant temperature is inversely proportional to the pressure |
Charles's law | the volume of a given mass of a gas at constant temperature is directly proportional to the absolute temperature |
Dalton's law of partial pressures | the total pressure of a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of each gas |
Diffusion | the process in which a gas uniformly spreads throughout a larger volume by random movement and collisions |
Gay-Lussac's law of combining volumes | when measured at the same temperature and pressure, the ratio of the volumes of gases that react or that are formeed as products are small whole numbers |
Graham's law of diffusion | the velocities and thus the rates of diffusion of two gases under the same conditions of temperature and presure are inversely propotional to the square root of their molar masses |
Ideal gas | A theoretical gas which adheres exactly to the gas laws |
Ideal gas equation | an equation relating pressure, volume, moles, and temperature of an ideal gas; PV=nRT |
Kinetic-molecular theory | A model which is used to explain gas behavior on the major premise that molecules are in constant motion |
Manometer | a device consisting of two types, open-end and closed-end, used in the laboratory to measure gas pressures |
Molar volume | the volume of one mole of a gas under STP conditions, generally given as 22.4 L |
Partial pressure | the pressure exerted by a gas in a mixture of gases, independently of the other gases that are present |
Pressure | A force per unit area |
Standard temperature and pressure (STP) | defined as 0 degrees C and 1 atm or 760 torr. In this text, most calculations involving STP use the figure 273 K for ease of calculation |
