Question | Answer |
product law of exponents: multiplying expressions with the same base | a^b * a^c = a^(b+c) |
order of operations: | PEMDAS ()^e * / + - |
product law of exponents: multiplying expressions with same exponent | a^c * b^c = (a*b)^c |
quotient law of exponents: dividing expressions with the same base | a^b / a^c = a^(b-c) |
quotient law of exponents: dividing expressions with the same exponent | a^c / b^c = (a/b)^c |
power of a power law of exponents: use when raising an exponent to a power | (a^b)^c = a^(b*c) |
base | the number in an exponential expression that is multiplied by itself. In t^3, t is the base. |
common factor | a common factor of two or more numbers is a number that is a factor of all the numbers. Example: 5 is a common factor of 15,25 and 40. |
common multiple | a common multiple of a set of numbers is a multiple of all of the numbers. Example: 24 is a common multiple of 3,8 and 12. |
composite number | a whole number greater than 1 with more than two factors. Example 12 is greater than 1 with more than 2 factors. The 6 factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6 and 12. |
exponent | A symbol written above and to the right of a quantity that tells how many times the quantity is multiplied by itself. In t^3, 3 is the exponent. |
factor | A factor of a whole number is another whole number that divides into it without a remainder. 1,2,3,4,6,8,12 and 24 are factors of 24. |
factor pair | A factor pair for a number is two factors whose product equals that number. Factor pairs for 24 = (1,24)(2,12)(3,8)(4,6) |
greatest common factor GCF | GCF of 2 (or more) numbers is the largest of all the factors that is common to both (or all) of the numbers. The GCF of 24 and 36 is 12. |
least common multiple LCM | LCM of 2 (or more) numbers is the smallest of all the multiples that is common to both (or all) of the numbers. The LCM of 6 and 15 is 30. |
multiple | a multiple of a whole number is the product of that number and another whole number. 35 is a multiple of 7. It is also a multiple of 5. |
power | a number that is written using an exponent |
prime number | a whole number greater than 1 with only two factors: 1 and itself. 13 is a prime number because if has only 2 factors (1,13). |
relatively prime | two numbers are relatively prime if their only common factor is 1. 7 and 9 are relatively prime. |
