Term	Definition
ACT/SAT	standardized college entrance exams
Dorm	a building, as at a college, containing a number of private or semi private rooms for residents, usually along with common bathroom facilities and recreation areas
Major	primary focus of study
Minor	secondary focus of study
AP	courses equate to a first year college level course
Pre-AP	courses are designed to teach students the skills necessary to be successful in Junior and Senior level high school
FAFSA	is a form that can be prepared annually by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid
Master's Degree	a second-cycle academic degree awarded by universities or colleges upon completion of a course of study demonstrating a high-order overview of a specific field of study or area of professional practice
Associate Degree	a degree granted after a two-year course of study, especially by a community or junior college
Financial Aid	grant or scholarship, loan, or paid employment offered to help a student meet his/her college expenses
Private College/University	independent school that sets its own policies and goals, and is privately funded
Bachelor's Degree	undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study lasting three to seven years
GPA	typically calculated by adding all the numbered grades you've received and dividing them by the number of credits you've taken
Work Study	provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses
Community College	a nonresidential junior college offering courses to people living in a particular area
Graduate	relating to, or engaged in studies beyond the first or bachelor's degree
Undergraduate	a student at a college or university who has not yet earned a bachelor's or equivalent degree
Credit Hours (HS/College)	unit of measuring educational CREDIT, usually based on the number of classroom hours per week throughout a term
Grant	non-repayable funds or products disbursed or gifted by one party, often a government department, corporation, foundation or trust, to a recipient
Loan	sum of money borrowed from a financial institution or bank by an individual or entity, for a reason, that requires repayment along with the interest after the term expires, for which it is repaid
Scholarship	a grant or payment made to support a student's education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievement.
Tuition	a sum of money charged for teaching or instruction by a school, college, or university
Room and Board	the cost associated with the place where you live and the meals that you eat on a college campus
Public University	is predominantly funded by public means (taxes) through a national or subnational government
HBCU	a college or university that was originally founded to educate students of African-American descent
Liberal Arts	academic subjects such as literature, philosophy, mathematics, and social and physical sciences as distinct from professional and technical subjects
Technical/Junior College	an educational institution that offers two years of studies corresponding to those in the first two years of a four-year college and that often offers technical, vocational, and liberal studies to the adults of a community
Student to Teacher Ratio	is the number of students who attend a school or university divided by the number of teachers in the institution; smaller the ratio the smaller the classes
In State	refers to students who live in the state of the public college
Out of State	refers to students who do not live in the state of the public college
Student Organization	is a society or an organization, operated by students at a university or a college institution, whose membership typically consists only of students or alumni
Acceptance requirements	a list of criteria that a student must submit with their college application in order to be accepted to a college or university
