Question | Answer |
Data | are observations (measurements, genders, survey responses etc...) that have been collected. |
Statistics | a collection of methods for planning studies and experiments obtaining data and then organizing summarizing, presenting, analyzing, interpreting, and drawing conclusion about the data |
population | conplete collection of all elements (scores, people, measurements etc) to be sutdied. The collection is complete in the sense that it includes all subjects to be studied. |
Census | is the collection of data from every member of a population. |
Sample | is a sub collection of members selected from a population. |
parameter | is a numerical measurement describing some characteristic of a population. |
statistic | is a numerical measurement describing some characteristic of a sample. |
Quantitative Data | consist of numbers representing counts or measurements EX The weights of supermodels |
Qualitative (categorical or attribute) Data | can be separated into different categories that are distinguished by some non numeric characteristic. EX: The genders (male/female) of professional athletes. |
Discrete DATA: | result when the number of possible values is either a finite number or a countable number. (that is, the number of possible values is 0,1 or 2 etc... EX:The numbers of eggs that hens lay are discrete data because they represent counts |
Continuous (numerical)data | continuous scale that covers a range of values with out gaps, interruptions or jumps. EX:cows may give an amount om milk between 0 and 5 gallons but this include fractional amounts 2.3378 |
nominal level of meauremet | characterized by data that consist of names, labels, or categories only. the data cannot be arranged in an ordering scheme such as low to high EX. survey response yes, no maybe Ex ranks of cities livability no definition of difference in 1 and 2 |
interval level of measurement | is like the ordinal level. with additional property that the difference between 2 data values is significant.90 degrees compare to 95 degrees |
ratio level of measurement | is the interval level with the addtiional property that there is also a natural zero starting point. zero indicates that none present. Ex. prices $0 no cost to $90 is three times more expensive than $30. degrees in F 90 degrees not 3 times hotter than 30 |
