apostrophe | a direct address to someone or something |
overstatement or hyperbole | exaggeration used to emphasize a point |
understatement | an ironic figure of speech that describes something in a way that is less than the case |
metonymy | a thing is substituted |
synecdoche | the use of a part to stand for the whole |
paradox | a statement that is self-contradictory; an apparent contradiction that is actually true |
