Term | Definition |
Stanza | Groups of lines in a poem |
Free Verse | A style of poetry that does not have a regular rhythm and sounds more like a conversation |
Repetition | Repeating sounds, words, phrases, or whole lines |
Sensory Detail | Imagery that uses words to appeal to the five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch, taste |
Simile | A comparison of two UNLIKE things that uses the words AS or LIKE |
Personification | Giving human characteristics to something that is not human like an object or element |
Adjective | A word that describes a noun |
Adverb | A word that describes a verb or adjective (usually ending in -ly) |
Onomatopoeia | A word in which the sound implies its meaning (hint: snap, crackle, pop) |
Metaphor | A comparison of two UNLIKE things that does not use the words like or as, but instead uses the form of To Be and turns one object into the other |
Hyperbole | Exaggeration, often extreme and often in the form of a simile, metaphor, or personification |
Alliteration | Repeating the same consonant over and over throughout a poem. |
Assonance | Repeating the same vowel sound over and over throughout a poem |
Rhythm | The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry or the "beat" of a poem |
