Question | Answer |
Dalton's atomic model | Elements are indivisible atoms; Same elements are alike in mass and size; different elements differ in mass and size;law of conservation of matter; law of definite proportion; law of multiple proportion |
What is the law of definite composition? | compounds always contain two or more elements combined in definite proportion by mass |
What is the law of multiple proportion? | Atoms of two or more elements may combine in different ratios to form different compounds. |
What is a law? | A summary of observed behavior. |
What is a model of theory? | A model is an attempt to explained the observed behavior. |
What are three subatomic particles? | Electrons, Neutrons and Protons. |
Who was J.J. Thomson? | A scientist from England that introduced the idea of subatomic particles. (1897) |
What is the atomic number? | It represents the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. |
What is the mass number? | It represents the number of protons and neutrons. |
What are isotopes? | Elements having the same atomic number but different atomic mass (mass number). |
How do you use isotopic notation? | Mass number on the left superscript, atomic number on the left subscript of the elements symbol. |
How do you identify isotopes of an element? | By the symbol a hyphen then the number of mass number of the isotope. i.e. C-12; C-13; C-14 |
