Term | Definition |
independent clause | contains both a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a sentence |
dependent clause | contains both a subject and a verb but cannot stand alone because it has a subordinator at the beginning |
subordinating conjunction | a word at the beginning of a clause that makes it dependent |
simple sentence | contains one independent clause |
compound sentence | contains two independent clauses with a comma and a conjunction to separate them |
coordinating conjunction ( FANBOYS) | connecting words for two simple sentences forming a compound sentence |
run-on sentence | two complete thoughts joined together without proper punctuation or a conjunction |
comma splice | when two or more complete thoughts are joined by a comma without a conjunction |
complex sentence | contains an independent clause and a dependent clause |
appositive | a noun or noun phrase the renames another noun right beside it separated by commas |
preposition | a word that shows relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence |
prepositional phrase | includes a preposition, its object, and any modifiers |
