Term | Definition |
Ion | atom which has gained or lost electrons, a charged particle |
Isotope | Atoms which have the same atomic number BUT different atomic masses |
empirical formula | lowest whole number ration of a formula. All ionic compounds are written empirically |
allotrope | one,two or more different forms of an element in the same element in the same phase. ex graphite and diamond, O2 and Ozone O3 |
electrolyte | a substance whose water solution will conduct electricity (ions) |
entropy | a measurement of the disorder or randomness of a system |
LEO | Lose electrons...Oxidation |
GER | Gain electrons...reduction |
endothermic | a chemical reaction that absorbs heat (heat in) |
exothermic | a chemical reaction that releases energy ( heat out) |
excited state | electrons in an atom occupy higher energy level even though lower levels are unoccupied |
ground state | electrons occupy the lowest available energy levels of an atom |
Molarity M | the concentration of a substance in moles per liter of solution |
solution | a homogeneous mixture of substances in the same physical state |
solute | the substance being dissolved |
solvent | the substance that dissolves the solute |
saturated | a solution containing the maximum amount of solute that will dissolve at a given temperature. |
unsaturated | a solution in which more solute can be dissolved at a given temperature |
supersaturated | a solution that contains more solute than would dissolve in a saturated solution at a given temperature |
