Isotope Notation | Atomic Mass on left top; Atomic No. on left bottom of Chemical symbol |
Mass Number | sum of neutrons and protons in the nucleus of an atom |
Proton | a particle with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron bit of an opposite sign; located nucleus |
Neutron | a subatomic particle of about the same mass as a proton but w/o an electric charge; located in the nucleus |
Electron | a stable subatomic particle with a charge of negative electricity |
Ion | an atom of group of combined atoms that has a charge b/c loss or gain of electrons |
Anion | a negatively charged ion, one that would be attracted to the anode in electrolysis |
Cation | a positively charged ion, one that would be attracted to the cathode in electrolysis |
A | atomic mass |
Z | atomic no. |
Half-life | the time taken for the radioactivity of a specified isotope to fall to half its original value |
Alpha Particle | a helium nucleus emitted by some radioactive decay of substances |
Beta Particle | a fast-moving electron emitted by some radioactive substance |
Gamma Ray | penetrating electromagnetic radiation of a kind arising from the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei |
Decay | change from an element into a different element, usually with some other particles & energy emitted |
