ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION | a kind of radiation including visible light, radio waves, gamma rays, and X-rays, in which electric and magnetic fields vary simultaneously. |
Electromagnetic Spectrum | the range of wavelengths or frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends. |
Wavelength | the distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave. |
Frequency | he rate at which a vibration occurs that constitutes a wave, either in a material (as in sound waves), or in an electromagnetic field (as in radio waves and light), usually measured per second. |
Photoelectric Effect | The photoelectric effect refers to the emission, or ejection, of electrons from the surface of, generally, a metal in response to incident light |
Quantum | a discrete quantity of energy proportional in magnitude to the frequency of the radiation it represents. |
Photon | a particle representing a quantum of light or other electromagnetic radiation. A photon carries energy proportional to the radiation frequency but has zero rest mass. |
Ground State | the lowest energy state of an atom or other particle. |
Excited State | excited state can commonly take the form of the electron jumping from its original energy level or orbital, also known as the ground state, to an empty orbital of a higher energy shell that is further away from the nucleus. |
Line Emission Spectrum | When an electric current passes through a gas, it gives energy to the gas. This energy is then given out as light of several definite wavelengths (colours). This is called a line emission spectrum. |
Continuous Spectrum | an emission spectrum that consists of a continuum of wavelengths. |
