| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Element | Substance consisting of atoms which all have the same atomic number/ same number of protons |
| Compound | A substance formed when 2 or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together |
| Atom | Smallest unit of matter |
| Nucleus | The central part of an atom that contains protons and neutrons |
| Protons | Positively charged atom found in the nucleus |
| Neutrons | Neutrally charged atom found in the nucleus |
| Electrons | Negatively charged atom found floating around the nucleus |
| Energy Level | The fixed energies an electron can have |
| Valence Electrons | Electrons found on the outermost shell of an atom |
| Atomic Number | The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom |
| Period | Horizontal row of elements that have the same number of shells |
| Group | Vertical columns of elements that share similar characteristics |
| Ion | Atoms with a charge |
| Polyatomic ion | 2 or more atoms covalently bonded |
| Ionic Bond | A chemical bond between 2 ions with opposite charges (e.g. NaCl) |
| Subscript | The number of atoms in a molecule (H2O. There are 2 hydrogen atoms) |
| Chemical Formula | Tells the number of atoms of each element in a compound. |
