Oxidation | Loss of electrons |
Reduction | Gain of electrons |
Oxidising agent | A substance which brings about oxidation |
Reducing agent | A substance that brings about reduction |
Oxidation number | The charge an atom has or appears to have when electrons are distributed according to certain rules |
Oxidation Rules | Any uncombined element is zero. An ion is equal to its charge. Sum of numbers in a compound is equal to zero. Oxygen is always -2 except in peroxides and OF2. Hydrogen is 1 except in metal hydrides. Halogens are always -1, unless <electronegative. |
