Question | Answer |
Oxidation - reduction reactions | The chemical changes that occur when electrons are transferred between reactants, also called redox reactions |
Oxidation | Originally meant the combination of an element with oxygen to give oxides |
Reduction | The loss of oxygen from one compound |
Reducing Agent | The substance in a redox reaction that donates electrons |
Oxidizing Agent | The substance in a redox reaction that accepts electrons |
Oxidation Number | A positive or negative number assigned to an atom according to a set of arbitrary rules |
Half-Reaction | An equation showing either the reduction or the oxidation of a species in an oxidation-reduction reaction |
Spectator Ion | The ion that remains unchanged in charge |
Why must oxidation and reduction occur together? | Oxidation and reduction always occur together. If one substance gives away oxygen (oxidation), a second substance must be present to take on that oxygen (reduction). |
