variable | a letter or other symbol that represents a number |
ratio | a comparison by division of two quantities with the same units |
rate | a comparison by division of two quantities with different units |
pi 3.14 | the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter |
formula | a general rule for finding the value of something |
line graph | a graph in which data points are connected by line segments |
radius | a line segment from the center of a circle (or sphere) to any point on the circle (or sphere) |
diameter | a line segment that passes through the center of a circle or sphere and has endpoints on the circle or sphere |
coordinate | a number used to locate a point on a number line; a point's distance from an origin; one of the numbers in an ordered pair that locates a point on a coordinate grid |
algebraic expression | an expression that contains a variable |
circumference | the distance around a circle; its perimeter |
common factor | a factor of two or more counting numbers |
equal chance/equally likely | having the same probability |
factor tree | a strategy to get the prime factorization of a counting number |
greatest common factor (GCF) | the largest factor that two or more counting numbers have in common |
least common multiple (LCM) | the smallest number that is a multiple of two or more given numbers |
magnitude | 10 times an amount |
multiplication counting principle | a strategy for determining the total number of possible outcomes for two or more separate choices |
prime factorization | a counting number written as a product of prime-number factors |
probability | a number from 0 through 1 giving the likelihood of an event happening |
tree diagram | a strategy used to find all outcomes in a probability situation |
