Term | Definition |
ball-and-stick model | 3D models with sticks to represent bonds and spheres to represent atoms. |
tetrahedron | a solid having four plane triangular surfaces; a triangular pyramid |
tetrahedral molecule | a molecule with a symmetrical shape, with one atom exactly in the center. |
electron domain | the space between atoms occupied by the electrons, often shown as a shaded region |
electron domain theory | also called VSEPR theory, the tendency for electron pairs to be as far apart from one another as possible. |
pyramidal molecule | when all the hydrogen atoms are located on one side of a single atom. |
bent molecule | describes a molecule with two bonded pairs and two lone pairs where the two bonded pairs are on the same side of the central atom. |
linear molecule | when all the atoms are in a straight line |
point molecule | when there are no bonded pairs, only lone pairs |
triagonal planar | when the three electron domains spread out into the shape of a flat triangle |
space-filling model | 3D Model where there is no space between atoms. Instead, bonded atoms are shown slightly overlapping. |
receptor site theory | molecules have specific shapes that will fit only certain receptor sites |
gas | the form of matter that conforms to the size and shape of its container |
