| Term | Definition |
| Code | Set of requirements covering permissible materials, service limitations, fabrication, inspection, testing procedures, and qualifications of welders. |
| Cracks | Narrow breaks that occur in the weld metal, in the base metal, or in the crater formed at the end of a weld bead. |
| Inclusion | Foreign matter introduced into and remaining in a weld. |
| Laminations | Cracks in the base metal formed when layers separate. |
| Defect | A discontinuity or imperfection that renders a part of the product or the entire product unable to meet minimum acceptable standards or specifications. |
| Discontinuity | A change or break in the shape or structure of a part that may or may not be considered a defect, depending on the code. |
| Undercut | Groove melted into the base metal beside the weld. It is the result of the arc removing more metal from the joint face than is replaced by weld metal. |
| Arc Strike | Small, localized points where surface melting occurs away from the joint. |
| Spatter | Very fine particles of metal on the plate surface adjoining the weld area. |
| Incomplete Joint Penetration | Occurs when the filler metal fails to penetrate and fuse with an area of the weld joint. |
| Incomplete Fusion | The failure of a welding process, to fuse or join together, layers of weld metal or weld metal and base metal. |
