Term | Definition |
Work | the transfer of energy through motion |
Atomic Weight | the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus |
Atomic Weight = | Number of Protons + Number of Neutrons |
Atomic Symbol | the abbreviation of the atom name |
Proton | Positive charged, found in the nucleus |
Neutron | Neutral mass in the nucleus |
Electron | Negative charged mass spinning around the nucleus |
Sub-atomic particles: | Proton, Neutron, Electron |
Atomic Number = | Number of Protons and number of Electrons |
Atomic Number | the number of Protons and Electrons in an atom |
The chemical formula states | the types of atoms (i.e. elements) in the compound, the ratio of the different atoms in the compound |
Compound | is a substance which is made up of two or more different elements chemically combined together. |
Compound | pure substances that are the unions of two or more different elements. They can be broken into simpler substances by chemical means. |
Molecule | is made up of two or more atoms chemically combined |
Elements | simplest form of pure substance. They cannot be broken into anything else by physical or chemical means. An element is a substance made up of only one type of atom |
Mixtures | two or more substances that are not chemically combined with each other and can be separated by physical means |
Hydroelectric energy | Energy for the flow of water |
Biomass energy | Energy from burning organic or living matter |
Wind energy | Energy from the wind |
Law of Conservation of Energy | Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Energy is always changing (transforming) from one kind to another. The total energy of an object never changes. |
Potential Energy | exists whenever an object which has mass, has a position within a force field. |
Kinetic Energy | exists whenever an object which has mass is in motion with some velocity |
Mechanical energy | is the movement of machine parts |
Sound energy | is the movement molecules in the air that produces vibrations |
Thermal energy | is the internal energy in substances-the vibration and movement of atoms and molecules within substance. |
Nuclear energy | is the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom |
Electrical energy | is the movement of electrons |
Chemical energy | is the energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules |
Radiant energy | is the movement of photons |
Nonrenewable resource | is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption |
Renewable resources | are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time |
Geothermal energy | Energy from Earth’s heat |
Solar energy | energy from the sun |
