central nervous system | The central nervous system is the part of the nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord |
nerve impulse | a signal transmitted along a nerve fiber. It consists of a wave of electrical depolarization that reverses the potential difference across the nerve cell membranes. |
cerebellum | the part of the brain at the back of the skull in vertebrates. Its function is to coordinate and regulate muscular activity. |
cerebrum | the principal and most anterior part of the brain in vertebrates, located in the front area of the skull and consisting of two hemispheres, left and right, separated by a fissure. |
optic nerve | each of the second pair of cranial nerves, transmitting impulses to the brain from the retina at the back of the eye |
sensory nerves | A sensory nerve is a nerve that carries sensory information toward the central nervous system. It is an enclosed, cable-like bundle of afferent nerve fibers in the peripheral nervous system |
motor nerves | a nerve carrying impulses from the brain or spinal cord to a muscle or gland. |
cochlea | the spiral cavity of the inner ear containing the organ of Corti, which produces nerve impulses in response to sound vibrations |
