binary ionic compound | compound that contains two elements - a positive ion (cation) which is always written first in the formula, and a negative ion (anion) |
ionic compound | compound that contains a metal and a nonmetal |
ionic bond | bond where electrons are either accepted or donated |
covalent compound | also known as a molecular compound - compound that contains two nonmetals |
covenant bond | bond where electrons are shared |
polyatomic ion | a charged ion consisting of two or more atoms bound together |
oxyanions | specific polyatomic ions that contain at least one oxygen atom and one or more atoms of at least one other element |
ternary compound | compound that contains three different elements |
acid | a substance that produces hydrogen ions (H+=protons) in solution; a proton donor |
base | a substance that produces hydroxide ions in solution; a proton acceptor |
