| imagery | a word or phrase that appeals to the five senses |
| topic | one word or short phrase that tells what the poem is about |
| theme | a complete sentence that explains a truth about life or human nature |
| tone | at least one adjective that describes the author's attitude toward his subject |
| simile | a comparison between two things using like or as |
| metaphor | a comparison between two things that does not use like or as |
| personification | when human qualities and characteristics are given to non-human things or animals |
| rhythm | the organization and repetition of sound patterns |
| meter | the basic beat of a poem |
| free verse | poetry written without a set meter or rhyme |
| rhyme | the repetition of the sound at the ends of words |
| approximate rhyme | words that do not have exactly the same sounds but look like they should rhyme |
| rhyme scheme | a pattern of rhyming words |
| end rhyme | rhyming words that are located at the end of lines |
| internal rhyme | rhyming words that are located inside lines of a poem |
| onomatopoeia | works that sound like what they mean |
| alliteration | the repetition of the same consonant sounds in several words that are close together |
| assonance | the repetition of vowel sounds found in the middle of words that do not rhyme |
| refrain | a repeated line or groups of lines |
