Poly-atomic ion | |
Nomenclature | the devising or choosing of names for things, especially in a science or other discipline. |
Octet Rule | a chemical rule of thumb that reflects observation that atoms of main-group elements tend to combine in such a way that each atom has eight electrons in its valence shell, giving it the same electronic configuration as a noble gas. |
Ionic Bond | the complete transfer of valence electron(s) between atoms. It is a type of chemical bond that generates two oppositely charged ions. In ionic bonds, the metal loses electrons to become a positively charged cation. |
Stock System | a widely used system of chemical nomenclature developed by the German chemist Alfred Stock and first published in 1919. |
Oxidation Number | The oxidation number of simple ions is equal to the charge on the ion. |
Covalent Bond | a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms. |
Metallic Bond | the force of attraction between valence electrons and the metal ions. |
Polar Covalent | The greater the electronegativity difference, the more ionic the bond is. |
Non-polar Covalent | a type of chemical bond where two atoms share a pair of electrons with each other. |
