Term | Definition |
sample size | a small amount of something selected at random from the whole that shows what the whole looks like |
statistics | the study of data: how to collect, summarize, and present it |
survey | to gather information by individual samples so as to learn about the whole thing |
biased sample | an small amount of something that does not fairly represent the whole |
inferences | the process of reaching a conclusion about something from known facts or evidence |
data | a collection of facts, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations, or even just descriptions of things |
hypothesis | a statement that might be true, which can then be tested |
population | the whole group from which a sample is taken |
random sampling | a selection that is chosen randomly |
mean | a measure of center that is found by dividing the sum of the data by the number of numbers in the data |
range | a measure of variability that is found by subtracting the minimum from the maximum in a set of data |
MAD | a measure of variability that is found by taking the mean of the all the absolute value deviations of a set of data. |
median | a measure of center that is found by looking at the middle number when the data is ordered from least to greatest |
minimum | the smallest piece of data |
maximum | the largest piece of data |
