Term | Definition |
Theoretical Probability | The desired outcome of the event divided by the total number of possible outcomes. |
Experimental Probability | The number of times an event occurs dividing by the number of trials completed. |
Sample Space | The set of all possible outcomes of an experiment. |
Tree Diagram | a diagram with a structure of branching connecting lines, representing different processes and relationships. |
Venn Diagram | a diagram that uses circles to represent sets and their relationships. |
Union | The group of all unique elements of two or more sets. Denoted with the “∪” symbol. |
Intersection | The group of elements that two or more sets have in common. Denoted with the “∩” symbol. |
Complement | The set of all possible “failures” for an event. |
Frequency Table | A table that shows the total for each category or group of data. |
Probability Distribution | A table or an equation that links each outcome of a statistical experiment with its probability of occurrence. |
Relative Frequency | The ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the number of times in which it might occur. |
Compound Probability | The probability of two independent events occurring. |
Independent Events | Two or more events that in no way affect the probability of one another. |
Conditional Probability | The probability of an event occurring, given that another event has already occurred. |
