Term | Definition |
Area | The number of square units needed to cover a surface enclosed by a geometric figure. |
Congruent Figures | Figures that have the same shape and size. |
Equation | A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal. Example: 3 x (7 + 8) = 9 x 5 |
Exponent | A number that indicates how many times a number or expression is to be multiplied by itself. Example: In the expression 5^3, the exponent is 3. |
Expression | A mathematical combination of numbers, variables, and operations. Example: 5 + 2 |
Greatest Common Factor | The greatest number that is a factor of two or more numbers. Example: The greatest common factor of 30, 60, and 15 is 15. |
Improper Fraction | a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator, such as 5/4. |
Inequality | An open sentence that uses the symbol <, , >, or to compare two quantities. |
Integers | The set of whole numbers and their opposites {. . .-2, -1, 0, 1, 2. . .}. |
Least Common Multiple | The least nonzero number that is a common multiple of two or more numbers. Example: 36 is the least common multiple of 3, 9, and 12. |
Mean | The sum of the numbers in a set of data divided by the number of pieces of data in the set. |
Median | The middle number in a set of data when the data are arranged in numerical order. If the data has an even number, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers. |
Mixed Number | a number consisting of an integer and a proper fraction such as 3 1/2. |
Multiplicative Identity | For any number a, a x 1 = 1 x a = a. Example: 4 x 1 = 1 x 4 = 4 |

Percent | A ratio that compares a number to 100. Example: 76 out of 100 is 76 percent or 76%. |
Prime Number | A whole number, greater than 1, whose only factors are 1 and itself. |
Product | The result obtained by multiplying two or more numbers or variables. |
Quadrants | One of four regions into which the x- and y-axes separate the coordinate plane. |
Quotient | The result obtained by dividing two numbers. |
Range | The difference between the greatest number and the least number in a set of data. |
Rate | The ratio of two measurements having different units of measure. Example: 60 miles per hour |
Rational Numbers | The set of numbers that can be written as a fraction. |
Repeating Decimals | A decimal whose digits repeat in groups of one or more. Example: 0.181818. . . |
Solution | A value for the variable that makes an equation true. Example: The solution of 12 = x + 7 is 5. |
Terminating Decimals | A decimal whose digits end. Example: 0.2, -1.345 |
Variable | A letter or other symbol used to represent an unspecified number or value. |
