Question | Answer |
atomic number | The number of protons in an atom |
symbol | The letters that represent an element. The first letter is always capital. If there is a second letter it is a lower case. |
element name | The name of the element |
atomic mass | the weight of the protons and neutrons because they are big and so that means they are heavy |
oribital | These are the energy levels or rings around the atoms where you can find electrons |
electrons | negatively charged, found in the energy levels, very tiny, move fast |
nuetrons | found in the nucleus of the atom |
protons | positive charge |
Alkali Metals | Group 1, very reactive, give away one electron |
Alkaline Earth Metals | Group 2, second most reactive, give away two electrons |
Transition Metals | Group 3-12, Good Conductors of heat and electricity |
Lanthanide Series | Period 6 at the bottom of the table |
Actinide Series | Period 7 at the bottom of the table |
Nobel Gases | Not reactive, they have 8 valence electrons already and do not like to combine. They are stable |
Mixed Group metals | Group 13-16 This group includes metals, metalloids, and non metals. |
Physical Change | Atoms do not rearrange. Examples include, color change, odor, taste, density, mass, hardness, boiling point, melting point |
Chemical Change/Reacion | Atoms rearrange, a different substance is produced, Energy is required |
Reactants | The left side of the equation |
Products | The right side of the equation |
Compound | Two or more elements |
Molecule | Two or more elements. All compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds |
Law of Conservation of Matter | Atoms are not created or destroyed only rearranged during a chemical reaction |
Endothermic | absorbs energy and the reaction feels cold |
Exothermic | releases energy and the reaction feels hot |
The periodic table is arranged by______________? | Atomic number |
How many electrons fit on the first energy level | 2 |
How many electrons fit on the second energy level | 8 |
How many electrons fit on the third energy level | 8-32 |
Name three chemical reactions | Gas production, temperature change, color change reaction |
Name the three parts of an atom | protons neutrons and electrons |
The electrical charge for a proton | positive |
The electrical charge for a nuetron | neutral |
The electrical charge for an electron | negative |
Where are the protons and neutrons found | in the nucleus |
Where are the electrons located | energy levels, orbitals, shells |
How do you calculate neutrons? | Subtract the atomic mass - the atomic number |
How do you know how many electrons in an atom | Its the same as the number of protons or the atomic number |
Is the atomic mass a decimal number or a whole number | decimal number |
The name of HCl | Hydrogen Cloride |
Why is carbon important | it has 4 valance electrons It can bond in many ways like rings, branches, and linearly |
Carbohydrates | they are energy |
Lipids | they are fats |
Proteins | They are meats |
DNA/RNA | Genetic make up |
