Term | Definition |
Pure Substance | A material that is composed of only one type of substance. It must be either be an element or a compound. |
Homogeneous Mixture | A mixture that has a uniform composition and properties throughout. The substances are so evenly distributed that it is difficult to distinguish one one substance in the mixture from another. |
Heterogeneous Mixture | Any mixture that is not uniform in composition and parts of the mixture are noticeably different. |
What is an example of a Homogeneous Mixture? | pool water, no-bake cookie batter, sugar water, salt water |
A solid is phase of matter. How would you best describe how the particles of a solid move according to Kinetic Theory of matter? | Because of a strong attractive force between particles, the particles vibrate around fixed locations. |
List the physical properties of matter | malleability, conductivity, viscosity, density, melting/boiling point, hardness |
List and give examples of the three properties of a mixture | solution - salt water, suspension - dirt water, colloid - milk |
How would you best describe the term endothermic? | When the system absorbs energy from its surroundings, like melting ice. |
What is a chemical change? | When a reaction occurs, and one or more new substances are created. The change is not easily reverseD. |
True or False: Chemistry is the study of composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter. | True |
Describe the difference of Kinetic Theory between a liquid and gas. | The particles in a liquid have a stronger attractive force, and particles are closer together. |
If you measure the mass of 10 milliliters of water, and its mass was 10 grams. What is the density of the water? | Density = mass/volume = 10 grams/10 milliliters = 1 g/ml |
What are the two chemical properties? | flammability and reactivity |
Describe the main differences between a chemical change and physical change. | A physical change will alter the shape, size, and appearance, but the substance remains the same. A chemical change will react and form one or more new substances. |
Name the three primary phases of matter. | Solid, Liquid, Gas |
What are three types of evidence for a chemical change? | A change in color, production of a gas, or formation of a precipitate. |
What is a term that describes when an object releases energy to its surroundings? | Exothermic |
In using the example of a hot air balloon, what happens to the volume of a gas when the temperature increases? | The gas particles will start to move faster and expand increasing the volume. |
True or False: As the pressure of a gas increases, the volume decreases. Pressure and Volume are inversely proportional. | True |
What is the definition of matter? | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
