Term | Definition |
Chemical Change | When one element changes it's chemical bonds and forms a new substance. |
Physical Change | When one element changes it's physical properties does not change substances. |
Chemical Property | The ability to make a chemical change. |
Physical Property | Characteristics of an substance that can be detected with your five senses. |
Synthesis | When one element combines with another element to make a combined substance. (a+b=ab) |
Decomposition | When a combined substance breaks down into it's original components. (ab=a+b) |
Single Replacement | When a combined substance switches one of it's elements with another element and the replaced element is left alone. (ab+c=ac+b) |
Double Replacement | When 2 combined substances get together and trade on of their elements. (ab+cd=ad=cb) |
Atom | The building blocks of matter or a single element. |
Molecule | A collection of atoms. |
Conservation of Mass | Matter cannot be created or destroyed. (balancing equations) |
Reactants | The input of a chemical equation |
Product | The output of a chemical equation |
