parentheses | parentheses are the the symbols used to show which operation or operations in an expression should be done first. |
brackets | Mathematical brackets are symbols, such as parentheses, that are most often used to create groups or clarify the order that operations are to be done in an algebraic expression. |

numerical expression | The term "numerical" means "involving numbers" and the term "expression" means "phrase". A numerical expression is a mathematical phrase involving only numbers and one or more operational symbols |
evaluate | To evaluate is to find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression. |
ordered pairs | An ordered pair is a pair of numbers used to locate a point on a coordinate plane; the first number tells how far to move horizontally and the second number tells how far to move vertically. |
coordinate plane | The plane determined by a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, and a vertical number line, called the y-axis, intersecting at a point called the origin. Each point in the coordinate plane can be specified by an ordered pair of numbers. |
