state of matter | one of the four distinct forms that matter can take the shape of (ie solid, liquid, gas, plasma) |
solid | a state of matter where particles have a high force of attraction and weak energy |
liquid | a state of matter where particles have a moderate force of attraction and energy |
gas | a state of matter where particles have weak forces of attraction and high energy levels |
atom | an elementary particle; it is the smallest form in which an element retains its properties |
proton | a particle that emits positive charge (1 elementary mass) |
neutron | a particle that neither emits positive nor negative charge (1 elementary mass) |
nucleus | the 1% of matter in an atom; it contains the protons and neutrons of an atom |
electron | a particle that emits negative charge (1 elementary mass) |
electron cloud | the area in which electrons orbit the nucleus of an atom |
valence electron | a type of electron in the atom that is located in the outermost shell |
Periodic Table of Elements | groups/families of elements organized by AN, reactivity, properties |
reactivity | how reactive a certain element is when exposed to other elements |
atomic number | the number of protons found in the nucleus of a particular element |
mass number | the average weight of all of an element’s isotopes |
atomic mass | the average sum of the amount of protons and neutrons in each of the element’s isotopes |
element | a pure, simplified form of matter that partially comprises our world |
