Term | Definition |
Numerator | tells how many parts are SELECTED |
Demoninator | tells how many TOTAL parts in each whole |
Proper or Common Fraction | the numerator is smaller than the denominator Example: 2/3 |
Improper Fraction | the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator Example: 12/7 |
Mixed Number | contains a whole number AND a common fraction |
Simplifying Fractions | reducing a fraction to the smallest possible equivalent fraction. Example: 6/12 is the same as 1/2 |
Greatest Common Factor | the biggest factor that the numerator and denominator have in common. |
Equivalent Fractions | two fractions that mean the same amount Example: 3/6 and 7/14 |
Changing Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions | Step 1: multiply the denominator and the whole number. Step 2: add the numerator to your answer (this is your new numerator). Step 3: place your new numerator over your old denominator. |
