Term | Definition |
Element | A substance that cannot be chemically broken down into simpler substances. |
Compound | Two or more elements chemically combined. |
Mixture | A substance made by mixing other substances together. (Not chemically combined) |
Solution | When substances are chemically combined and must be separated through more complex processes. |
Solute | A minor component in a solution; dissolved in the solvent. |
Solvent | A liquid (usually) in which a solute is dissolved in to form a solution. |
Physical Properties | Any property that can be observed. |
Chemical Properties | A characteristic of a substance that can be observed then the chemical composition is changed. |
Energy Levels | A fixed amount of energy that a system (ex//atoms) can have. |
Ionic (Bond) | relating to or using ions // The transfer of valence electrons between atoms to which generates 2 oppositely charged ions, therefore one atom becomes positively charged and the other becomes negatively charged. |
Covalent (Bond) | Of or relating to the chemical bonds formed by two atoms sharing electrons. |
Ion | An atom or molecule with an electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. |
Cation | A positively charged ion. |
Anion | A negatively charged ion. |
Metallic (Bond) | Relating to metals // A chemical bond between two+ atoms in a metallic element to which valence electrons move freely due to the atoms being so closely packed. |
Dot Diagrams | The method of writing the chemical symbol of an element/compound to indicate the number of electrons and/or valence electrons. |
