Term | Definition |
Variable | a symbol (usually a letter) used to represent an unknown number |
Base (of a power) | the (big) number used in repeated multiplication/division |
Exponent | the (small) number that tells us how many times to use the base in multiplication/division |
Square of a Number | when you multiply that number by itself |
Square Root of a Number | a number that, when used in multiplication two times, gives that number |
Cube of a number | when you multiply that number by itself three times |
Cube Root of a Number | a number that, when used in multiplication three times, gives that number |
± | tells you one value is positive and one value is negative (example: ±3 = 3 and -3 |
Simplify | to do all possible operations (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply and Divide, Add and Subtract) |
Expression | a mathematical phrase that can contain numbers, variables, and operations |
Power | refers to the exponent; (also) refers to a base number and its exponent |
Exponential Numbers | numbers that contain exponents |
Scientific Notation | a way to write very small or very large numbers |
Rational Numbers | numbers that can be written as a fraction |
Irrational Numbers | numbers that cannot be written as fractions |
