Term | Definition |
chemistry | the study of matter and how it changes |
matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
substance | matter that has specific composition and properties (aka: chemical) |
mass | the amount of matter |
model | a visual representation of something |
weight | mass + gravitational force |
quantitative data | information that describes how much, how tall, how fast, how little (numbers) |
qualitative data | information that describes odour, colour, taste, shape or other physical properties (language) |
hypothesis | a testable statement made about what has been observed |
experiment | an activity that allows you to create controlled observations to test a hypothesis |
conclusion | a judgement that is made based on the information obtained from the experiment |
independent variable | the variable that is changed during an experiment |
dependent variable | the variable that changes because of a change in the experiment |
control | the standard that is used for comparison in an experiment; nothing about it is changed |
scientific law | a relationship in nature that is supported by many experiments |
theory | an explanation that is supported by many experiments but can be changed with new information; if it can be used to make predictions that are proven true, it is seen as correct |
applied research | research that is conducted for a specific reason or to solve a specific problem |
chance discovery | scientific discovery that happens by accident; it is not intended |
pure research | research that is conducted because of curiosity or interest |
synthetic | something that is human-made and may not occur in nature |
technology | a practical use of scientific information |
scientific method | the organised process used by scientists to do research and verify the work of others |
base unit | a unit that is based on an object or event in the physical world |
derived unit | a unit that is based on two or more other units |
accuracy | how close a measured value is to an accepted value |
precision | how close a series of measurements are to one another |
dimensional analysis | an approach to problem solving that uses conversion factors to move between units |
conversion factors | a ratio of equal values with different units |
density | a physical property of matter; the amount of mass per unit of volume |
volume | the space occupied by an object |
interpolation | estimating an unknown value that is between two known values |
extrapolation | estimating an unknown value that is outside the known values |
macroscopic | large enough to be seen without any assistance |
microscopic | too small to be seen without a microscope |
submicroscopic | too small to be seen without using a specialised microscope |
