Term | Definition |
Ratio | A number, often seen as a fraction, used to make comparisons between two quantities |
Improper fraction | A fraction in which the numerator is larger than the demoninator |
Mixed number | A number that is written with both a whole number and a fraction |
Equivalent fractions | Fractions that are equal in value, but have different numerators and denominators; fractions that have the same simplest form |
Percent | Means "out of 100"; can be written as a decimal or a fraction with a denominator of 100 |
Absolute value | A number's distance from zero on the number line. Numbers that are the same distance from zero on the number line have the same _________. |
Benchmark | A reference number that can be used to estimate the size of other numbers. Examples: 0, 1/2, 1 |
Denominator | The number wirtten below the line in a fraction |
Numerator | The number written above the line in a fraction |
Fraction | Mathematical expression in the form a/b, where a and b are numbers; can indicate a part of a whole object or set, a ratio of two quantities, or a division |
Opposite | Two numbers whose sum is 0; two numbers that are the same distance from zero in different directions on the number line |
Unit rate | A rate in which the second number, usually the denominator, is 1 |
Decimal | A fraction written in base ten numeration. Example: 7/10 is written as .7 |
