Question | Answer |
What is the reaction between an acid and a base called | Neutralisation |
What colour does litmus paper turn in a base | Blue |
What colour does litmus paper turn in a acid | Red |
What is the pH scale | A range of values used to indicate how acidic or basic a substance is |
Give the pH of a substance with a Universal Indicator colour of Red | 1-2 |
Give the pH of a substance with a Universal Indicator colour of Orange | 3-5 |
Give the pH of a substance with a Universal Indicator colour of Green | 7 |
Give the pH of a substance with a Universal Indicator colour of Blue | 10 |
Give the pH of a substance with a Universal Indicator colour of purple | 14 |
Why would you not use Hydrochloric Acid to neutralise a wasp sting? | It is a strong acid and would do more harm than good |
What substance would you use to neutralise a bee sting? | Baking Soda. toothpaste |
Complete this Calcium Hydroxide + Sulfuric Acid → _______ + _______ | Calcium Sulfate + Water |
Sodium Hydroxide + hydrochloric acid → _____ + ______ | Sodium chloride + Water |
Zinc + sulfuric acid → ___________ + ________ | Zinc sulfate + hydrogen gas |
Sodium + hydrochloric acid → ___________+ ____________ | Sodium chloride + hydrogen gas |
calcium carbonate + sulfuric acid → ________+_______+_____ | calcium sulfate + carbon dioxide gas + water |
sodium carbonate + hydrochloric acid → ________+____+_____ | sodium chloride + carbon dioxide gas + water |
How do you test for hydrogen gas? | The pop test. light the gas and it it pops it is a positive test |
How do you test for carbon dioxide gas? | Bubble it through limewater. If it goes cloudy than it is carbon dioxide. |
What factors can speed up the rate of reaction? | Increase Temperature Increase the surface area to volume ratio (make it into a powder) Increase the concentration (Use of a catalyst) |
How does increasing the temperature increase rate of reaction? | Particles move faster and hence they collide more often. They also collide with more energy and so it is more effective. |
How does increasing the Surface Area to volume ration increase rate of reaction? | More particles are available to collide and so the frequency of collisions increase. |
How does increasing the concentration increase the rate of reaction? | There are more particles in a given volume so more collisions hence increase rate of reaction. |
