Term | Definition |
chemistry | The study of the properties of matter and its changes. |
precipitate | A solid that forms from a solution during a chemical reaction. |
chemical equation | A short, easy way to show chemical reactions, using symbols instead of words. |
chemical formula | A combination of symbols that represent the elements in a compound. |
coefficient | A number in front of a chemical formula in an equation that indicates how many molecules or atoms of each reactant and product are involved in the reaction. |
conservation of mass | The principle that states that matter is not created or destroyed during a chemical reaction. |
decomposition | A chemical reaction that breaks down compounds into simpler substances or products. |
product | A substance formed as a result of a chemical reaction. (Found on the right side of an equation.) |
reactant | A substance that is present at the beginning, or enters into a chemical reaction. (Found on the left side of an equation.) |
replacement reaction | A reaction in which one element replaces another in a compound; or when two elements in different compounds trade places. |
subscript | A number in a chemical formula, usually small, and written to the bottom right of a symbol, that tells the number of atoms in a molecule, or the ratio of elements in a compound. |
synthesis | A chemical reaction in which two or more elements combine to form a new, more complex substance. |
activation energy | The minimum amount of energy needed to get a chemical reaction started. |
catalyst | A material or substance that increases, or speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction by lowering the amount of activation energy needed. |
concentration | The amount of one material present in a certain volume of another material. |
endothermic reaction | A reaction that absorbs energy in the form of heat. (A cooling off reaction.) |
enzyme | A biological catalyst that lowers the activation energy of reactions in cells and speeds up the reaction. |
exothermic reaction | A reaction that releases energy in the form of heat. (A heating up reaction.) |
inhibitor | A material that decreases or slows down the rate of a chemical reaction, and increases the amount of activation energy needed. |
combustion | A rapid reaction between oxygen and a fuel that results in a fire. |
fuel | A material that releases energy when it burns. |
