Term | Definition |
Element | A pure substance made of only one kind of atom |
Atom | Basic unit of matter |
Titration | A measured amount of a solution of unknown concentration is added to a known volume of a second solution until the reaction between them is just complete |
Compound | a substance formed by chemical union of two or more elements or ingredients in definite proportion by weight |
pH scale | measurement system used to indicate the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in solution; ranges from 0 to 14 |
Chemical reaction | A process during which chemical bonds between atoms are broken and new ones are formed. Producing one or more different substances. |
Stoichiometry | the relation between the quantities of substances that take part in a reaction or form a compound (typically a ratio of whole integers) |
Acid | A substance that increases the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution. |
Base | A substance that decreases the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution. |
Reactant | A chemical substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction |
