percent composition | The percent by mass of each element in a compound. |
empirical formula | A formula with the lowest whole-number ratio of elements in a compound. |
molar mass | A general expression used to refer to the mass of a mole of any substance. |
ionic compound | Compound composed of positive and negative ions. |
molecular compound | Compound composed of molecules. |
monatomic ion | A single atom with a positive or negative charge as a result of losing or gaining valence electrons. |
polyatomic ion | A tightly bound group of atoms that behaves as a unit and carries a charge. |
anion | Any atom or group of atoms with a negative charge. |
cation | Any atom or group of atoms with a positive charge. |
ion | An atom or group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge. |
binary compound | A compound composed of two elements. |
chemical formula | Shows the number and type of atoms present in the smallest representative unit of a substance. (Ex: NH3) |
ternary compound | A compound containing atoms of three different elements, usually containing at least one polyatomic ion. (Ex: Na2CO3) |
anion | Fluorine with a -1 charge (anion or cation?) |
cation | Beryllium with a +2 charge (anion or cation?) |
monatomic ion | Phosphorus with a -3 charge (monatomic ion or polyatomic ion?) |
polyatomic ion | (PO4) with a -3 charge (monatomic ion or polyatomic ion?) |
