Term | Definition |
Atom | The smallest unit of matter. Atoms are made of protons, electrons, and neutrons. |
Proton | The positively charged part(s) of an atom located in the middle of the atom. |
Neutron | The part of an atom with no charge (neutral). The neutron(s) are located in the middle of an atom. |
Electron | The negatively charged part(s) of an atom located on the outside of the atom. |
Atomic Number | An element's atomic number is equal to the number of protons. |
Atomic Mass | Atomic mass is equal to the number of protons plus the number of neutrons. |
Bohr Model | A picture of an atom that includes the protons, neutrons, and ALL the electrons |
Lewis Dot Structure | A representation of an atom that includes only the atom's symbol and dots to show the number of valence electrons |
Ion | An atom that has a positive or negative charge because it is missing an electron or has an extra electron. |
