Question | Answer |
What is a molecule? | A molecule is made up of two or more atoms chemically combined. It is the smallest part of an element or compound that can exist on its own. |
What are compounds? | Compounds are substances made from two or more different elements chemically combined. |
How does bonding occur? | Bonding occurs because all atoms try to have a full outer shell, and will lose, gain or share electrons in order to do so. |
What is an ion? | An ion is a charged atom (an atom which has lost or gained electrons). If an atom loses an electron, then it becomes a positive ion. If an atom gains an electron, then it becomes a negative ion. |
How is an ionic bond formed? | An ionic bond is formed by the force of attraction between two oppositely charged ions. |
What is an example of an ionic bond? | An example of an ionic bond is sodium chloride, NaCl. The bonds in NaCl are formed by sodium atoms losing electrons and chlorine atoms gaining electrons. |
What is a covalent bond? | A covalent bond is a bond formed by different atoms sharing electrons in order to have a complete outer shell. |
What is an example of covalent bonding? | An example of a covalent bond is O2. The bonds in this molecule are formed by the atoms in the molecules sharing electrons with each other. |
In a negatively charged ion the number of (i)___________ is greater than the number of (ii)___________. Fill in the blanks. | (i) electrons (ii) protons |
In a positively charged ion the number of (i)___________ is greater than the number of (ii)___________. Fill in the blanks. | (i) protons (ii) electrons |
