law of conservation of mass | states that mass is neither created nor destroyed during chemical reactions or physical changes |
law of definite proportions | the fact that a chemical compound contains the same elements in exactly the same proportions by the mass regardless of the size of the sample or source of the compound |
law of multiple proportions | if two or more different compounds are composed of the same two elements, then the ratio of the masses of the second element combined with a certain mass of the first element is always a ratio of the small whole numbers |
atom | the smallest particles of an element that retains the chemical properties of that element |
atomic number | the number of protons |
isotopes | atoms of the same element that have the different mass |
mass number | total number of protons and neutrons |
nuclide | a general term for specific isotope of an element |
average atomic mass | the weighted average of the atomic masses of the naturally occurring isotopes of an element |
mole | amount of a substance that contains as many particles as there are atoms |
avogardro's number | 6.02 * 10^23 |
molar mass | mass of one mole of a pure substance |
