Term | Definition |
Law of Conservation of Mass | the mass is neither created nor destroyed during ordinary chemical reactions or physical changes |
Law of Definite Proportions | chemical compounds contain the same elements in exactly the same proportions y mass regardless of the size of the sample source of the compound |
Law of Multiple Proportions | if two or more different compounds are composed of the same two elements, then the ratio of the masses of the second element combined with a certain mass of the first element is always a ratio of the small whole number |
atom | the smallest particle of an element that retains the chemical property of that element |
nuclear forces | short-range proton-neutron, proton-proton, and neutron-neutron forces that hold nuclear particles together |
atomic number | number of protons of each atom in an element |
isotope | atoms of the same element with different masses |
mass number | total number of protons and neutrons in an isotope |
nuclide | specific isotope of an atom |
atomic mass unit | amu or 1/12 of a carbon atom |
average atomic mass | weighted average of naturally occurring isotopes of an element |
Avogadro's number | 6.02*10^23 |
molar mass | mass of one mole of a pure substance |
