Term | Definition |
fraction | a number used to name a part of a group or a whole |
numerator | the number above the fraction bar; the part of the whole |
denominator | the number below the fraction bar; the whole |
least common multiple (LCM) | the smallest non-zero number that is a multiple of two or more numbers |
multiple | the product of two numbers |
greatest common factor (GCF) | the largest number that divides two or more numbers evenly |
simplify | reducing a fraction to its lowest terms |
factor | one of two numbers multiplied to get a product |
multiply | to increase or cause to increase in number, quantity or degree |
divide | to split or separate into parts |
equivalent fractions | fractions whose denominator and numerator are in the same ratio as the original fraction |
mixed fractions | a whole number and a fraction combined into one "mixed number" |
improper fraction | where the numerator is greater or equal to the denominator - "top heavy" |
least common denominator (LCD) | the smallest number that can be used for all denominators of two or more fractions |
common denominator | when two or more factors have the same denominator |
ordering fractions | comparing fractions from the least to the greatest |
factor | one of two numbers multiplied together to get a product |
product | the answer of two factors being multiplied together. |
