interpretation	what message this artwork communicates, what the meaning or mood of the work is
judgement	determining if it's a successful work of art and the degree of artistic measure
line	the path of a point moving through space, artists use this to lead your eyes through a work of art because it takes movement
shape	a flat 2-D area with height and width
form	3-D shapes expressing length, width, and depth
color	the element of art concerned with visual quality of objects caused by the amount of light reflected by them
value	the lightness and darkness of a color
shade	a darker value made by adding black to a color
tint	a lighter value made by adding white to a color
texture	the way something feels to the touch or looks to the eye
tactile texture	texture you can feel
visual texture	the illusion of a 3-D surface
pattern	a regular, predictable repetition of elements in artwork
rhythm	the repetition of elements creating a feeling of visual motion in an artwork
balance	the arrangement of the parts of an artwork to give a sense of overall equality in visual weight. It can be symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial and informal.
printmaking	a process in which an artist repeatedly transfers an original image from one prepared surface to another

proportion	the principle of design concerned with the size relationship of one part to another
unity	the quality of seeming whole and complete, when all the parts of an artwork look right together
variety	the use or combination of different elements to add interest to artwork
emphasis	importance given to certain objects or areas in an artwork to create dominance, contrast, or a focal point
drawing	the process of moving an instrument over a smooth surface to leave a mark
contour line drawing	a drawing that defines the edges and surface ridges of an object
gesture drawing	an expressive drawing with intention of feeling the motion in the object
painting	the process of applying color to a surface using tools such as a brush, painting knife, a roller, or even your fingers
watercolor	paint with soft flowing, transparent colors.Always thinned with water.
acrylic	fast drying, and water soluble until they dry, but water-resistant when they dry
tempera	a paint that dries with an opaque finish, historically an egg
relief printing	an artist cuts away the sections of a surface not meant to hold ink
intaglio	a process in which ink is forced into lines that have been cut or etched on a hard surface such as metal or wood
lithography	the image to be printed is drawn with a greasy crayon that ink is attracted to, and the other areas are treated with a substance that repels ink
serigraphy	a process that uses a fabric screen stencil and ink is pressed through the screen. Non-image areas are blocked out so ink can not pass through.
3-D art	any artwork that has height, width, and depth

In the Round	freestanding art that is surrounded by negative space. All sides are worked by the artist.
Relief	only one side of the artwork is important , the artwork only comes slightly off its surface and it is not freestanding
functional art	art that has a use/job
simplified art	recognizable but not realistic
4 techniques for making sculpture	1. Assembling 2. Carving 3. Modeling 4. Casting
assembling	a process in which pieces of material are glued or joined together. This sculpture is built up.
carving	a sculpting method that artists create by subtracting or taking away the original material to form an image
modeling	the building up and shaping of soft material to create a sculpture
casting	a sculpting process where the artist starts by making a mold and then pours a material into the mold. the material will harden and become the sculpture.
